On the 27th February work started on the £1.4m extension to the Greyfriars Kirkhouse. The new building has been designed by the award-winning Gareth Hoskins Architects, whose work also includes the £47.4m renovation of the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street. The extension will provide extra classroom space for the work of the Grassmarket Community Project, as well as an exhibition/performance space which will be available for let to the local community and provide a vital income stream to fund the social enterprise activities.
With the site cleared, work began on digging out and filling the foundation trenches ready for the build. Work is expected to be complete by December 2012 and we will be following the progress and updating the site with news and images.
